Can I Get Health Insurance If I Move to Another State?
When you move to another state, you cannot carry your current insurance into the state. Each state has unique regulations regarding health coverage, including regulations for keeping health insurance plans in-state. Fortunately, you can still get insurance when you move regardless of which state you move to. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) makes allowances for a qualifying life event (QLE), such as relocating to another state.
You do not have to wait for open enrollment, which usually occurs between November 1st and December 15th. You can enroll in a new insurance plan regardless of when you move throughout the year. Plus, the insurance marketplace gives you a special enrollment period of 60 days. To learn more about how to update your insurance after you move, contact Insurance Enterprise. We can help you save money and get the right individual or family health insurance plan that meets your needs.
How to Report Your Move to Your Health Insurance Agent
If you enrolled in a health insurance plan through Insurance Enterprise, let us know by calling us. We can guide you through the process of finding a new provider in your state or updating your current plan through the same provider. Simply follow these steps.
Step 1: Contact Us
You can report a change by calling an Insurance Enterprise health Insurance agent at (888) 350-6605.
You can also report your change online. Just log into your Insurance Enterprise online account. Once signed in, you’ll see your dashboard and options for updating your information.
Step 3: Send Your Application
From there, you will be able to access your application online or get help filling it out from one of our agents. You’ll choose the year and state where you need coverage. You’ll then complete an application again, just as you did when applying for your previous health insurance plan.
Step 4: Update Your Information
You’ll also want to take this time to make any updates to your application. This includes the number of people in your household and your income. We’ll inform you how your changes have affected your insurance plan and rates.
Timeline for Your New Insurance Coverage
If you qualify for the special enrollment period, you will have 60 days to enroll in new insurance. Research your plan options and apply for your new health insurance within the 60-day SEP window. Be sure to do this as soon as you get a new address to prevent a coverage gap. If you enroll between the 1st–15th of the month, your new plan will typically start on the first day of the next month.
What Are Your Options for Insurance After Your Move?
Short-Term Insurance
One option for preventing a gap in coverage is short-term insurance. It can provide a bridge between traditional plans for protection in the interim. However, be aware that short-term insurance may have higher costs or fewer benefits than your current plan.
Group Health Insurance
If you will be working for the same employer that provides your current insurance, your plan and coverage will likely remain the same. However, one thing to remember is to check whether a local physician you’re considering and/or preferred area hospital is in the network under your policy.
Private Insurance
If you currently have individual or family insurance, you may find that your carrier offers coverage in the new state, perhaps with some minor differences in the details. If not, they may be able to suggest an alternative. So, ask ahead of time to be fully prepared. An independent insurance broker can serve as an advisor to help you find a new plan that fits your needs.
Coverage Through an ACA Exchange
You probably won’t be able to carry a healthcare insurance exchange or marketplace plan to your new state. Any tax credits you are receiving are likely to be different where you move, especially if your income level is expected to change. Also, make sure to alert your current exchange-based provider, so you don’t pay for coverage after you’ve moved.
Which Health Insurance Plan is Best for Me?
You may be wondering which health insurance company is the best? When choosing a plan, you first need to assess your personal healthcare needs, look at all your options, and choose a health insurance plan that fits your budget. How do you determine which health insurance is best? Ask yourself these questions:
- How often do you visit your doctor?
- What type of treatment do you need in the next 12 months?
- What prescription drugs do you currently take?
- Which healthcare providers/physicians do you prefer?
Once you decide your healthcare needs, you can narrow your search to health insurance companies in your state. Some of the health insurance providers that we work with include:
